BUCKFASTLEIGH & DISTRICT SOCIETY AIMS SHEET

What is it?

We are a group of local people from all walks of life who want to protect and promote interest in the history, natural history and general environment of Buckfastleigh and the surrounding area.

When the Society was founded in 1979, the following aims were suggested which are still applicable today:

To promote high standards of planning and architecture in or affecting the area

To educate in the geography, history, natural history and architecture of the area

To ensure the preservation, protection, development and improvement of features

of historic or public interest in the area

What does it do?

Over the intervening years, the Society has been much involved in various campaigns to enhance our Town.  The development and landscaping of the Orchard (that quiet open space by the river at the lower end of the Town), is mainly down to the efforts of the Society by running a Fun Day on the last Sunday in June each year.  This is a great community day and the money collected helps to maintain the Orchard and fund other projects in the Town.  The Society also holds a Local History Photographic Archive and limited Family History records.  For more information, visit our website: www.society.buckfastleigh.org.

When does it meet?

The Society meets once a month and there is a varied programme throughout the year of talks by local and not-so-local speakers, quizzes, walks and visits to local places of interest and, of course, the Fun Day with its famous Duck Race.
